Church of St. John the Evangelist, Little Wilbraham
Client – Little Wilbraham Parochial Church Council Date of Completion – 2001
St. John’s is a Grade II* listed building located five miles east of Cambridge on the edge of the Fens. The present Church is a largely Early English building, with later Decorated and Perpendicular alterations and additions. However, it was much altered and restored in the Victorian era. In the churchyard lies what is believed to be a late-medieval churchyard cross.
The initial scope of the work covered the redecoration of the Chancel and the limewashing of all internal wall surfaces; making good of damaged plasterwork; redecoration of window ferramenta and a small number of general maintenance items.
Further remedial works were required in order to deal with dampness in the fabric.
Significant archaeological ‘finds’ (including a double-piscina, leper squint, a leper window and various other blocked windows, carved stone crosses, and a Victorian decorative scheme) discovered as part of the work added a further dimension to the project.
