D and E Staircases were rebuilt by Salvin in the 1850s, using the original medieval footprint and basic structure. Part of our refurbishment project involved altering the porters' lodge to provide better facilities for the staff, and to make it more accessible for disabled people and more welcoming for visitors.

All the fitted furniture - porters’ desk, pigeonholes for students, fellows and staff - were made of beech-faced plywood with a stained finish. A college crest in stained glass became an important feature welcoming visitors as they enter.
