Freeland Rees Roberts tour Barnwell with Jon Harris
Freeland Rees Roberts has been treated to an architectural tour of the area around their City Road office by local artist, illustrator and calligrapher, Jon Harris. Jon’s encyclopaedic knowledge of the 19th century architecture in the Barnwell area now known as the Kite, brought to life the architectural world of Charles Humphrey and Richard Reynolds Rowe.
Humphey was an architect, developer, banker and Mayor of Cambridge. He was responsible for draining and levelling Parker’s Piece in time for the Coronation Feast held in 1838. His architectural contributions are still present along Parkside, Emmanuel Road, Orchard Street and Melbourne Place, which formed the boundaries of his estate. Rowe took over where Humphrey left off in the mid-19th century and formed the Victorian streets of the Kite area, much as it is seen today.
Jon Harris is well known for his illustrated maps, one of which can be seen on our Contact or How-to-find-us page.
Another area of Barnwell, to the south of Mill Road, formed the basis of a dissertation written by Freeland Rees Roberts’ Director, Jeremy Lander, The Caius Building Estate in Barnwell.
