Chrismatory Lantern

Norwich Cathedral

Client – Norwich Cathedral
Date of Completion – 2015

The Chrismatory lantern suspends above the 15th century font in St Luke’s Chapel at Norwich Cathedral. Designed by Cathedral Architect Henry Freeland and specialist metalworker Rupert Harris, the gold-plated brass lantern contains three bottles for Holy Oil, illuminated by LEDs. The container is supported from a stainless steel cable which passes through the vault of the Muniments Room above the chapel, from where it can be raised and lowered. Each bottle is housed behind a revolving glass shield.

Since his appointment as Surveyor to the Fabric, Henry Freeland has designed numerous fittings for the cathedral, from candlesticks for St Andrew’s Chapel, to new stalls in the nave sanctuary.
