Outdoor Pool

Client – Private Client
Date of Completion – 2018

A redundant outdoor pool has been brought back into use through a complete overhaul and conversion of an existing adjacent outbuilding to create changing facilities, a WC, a sauna, steam room and shower.

A new waterproof concrete trough has been cast into the existing pool to ensure watertightness and to reduce the depth of the pool from over 2m to 1.4m. The new pool is heated via an air source heat pump and the reduced volume of water allows use of the new facilities (at comfortable water temperature) for the majority of the year.

The existing outbuilding has been insulated and repaired. New glazed oak screens have been inserted into the existing openings and a new entrance door provides a direct link to the pool and a chilled plunge pool. The outbuilding also houses the pool water treatment and filtration plant.

Complex issues relating to drainage, pool water treatment and neutralisation had to be overcome, as the site has no connection to mains drainage and no mains water supply. Electric underfloor heating provides continuous background heat to the pool building and the instantaneous hot water supply ensures hot water is not stored over long periods.
