Bawdsey Radar Transmitter Block Shortlisted for RIBA Award

The recently reopened Bawdsey Radar Transmitter block has been shortlisted by the RIBA for a regional award.

Freeland Rees Roberts has been working with the Bawdsey Radar Trust on the HLF funded scheme since early 2014 to refurbish the Grade II* listed block which was on Historic England’s Buildings at Risk Register. Painstaking repairs were undertaken to restore the concrete blast walls using advanced  techniques to prevent futher corrosion before the earth revements were reinstated on two sides. Further repairs and alterations were needed throughout the building, including to the concrete roof where insulation was added, and a Corten steel accessible lavatory block was lowered between two of the blast walls. The building is now open to the public with an exhibition celebrating the story of radar development at the historic site.
