Freeland Rees Roberts wins David Urwin commendation

Freeland Rees Roberts have won a David Urwin commendation for their design of the Public Conveniences, Recycling Facilities and Office in Chesterton Road Cambridge. The commendation for Best New Building came at the annual David Urwin Awards dinner held at Kings’ College on Friday 25th March.

The City Council brief for Chesterton Road was for the architects to design a multi-purpose site, the chief component being lavatories that were well designed, accessible, and easily identified by visitors. The resultant daffodil yellow, curved structure met these criteria with imagination and style: the lavatories illustrate the combination of design and functionality for which Freeland Rees Roberts is well known.

‘We are so pleased to receive a David Urwin commendation for the Chesterton Road facilities,’ commented Tristan Rees Roberts. ‘These awards are unique to Cambridge and are known for their high standards. It is particularly satisfying to be commended for a project that is not at all grand, but recognised as necessary to the community’.
