House and Yoga Studio

Wicken, Ely

Client – Private Client
Date of Completion – 2005

Freeland Rees Roberts has been involved in two phases of improvements to a Grade II listed, 17th century thatched farmhouse in rural village of Wicken in Cambridgeshire.

Phase I involved the renovation of a semi-derelict barn and series of attached derelict outbuildings. The barn was transformed into a galleried studio, while the outbuildings were re-built as a guest annexe.

Phase II involved the complete modernisation and refurbishment of the farmhouse and the construction of a new orangery and yoga hall. Green oak trusses, designed by McCurdy & Co, support a sloping skylight against the higher back wall and a green roof system over the remainder. Large sliding glass doors in oak frames allow open onto the landscaped garden. Ecologically friendly materials are used throughout, and solar panels provide underfloor heating and hot water in the yoga hall.
